Syrian opposition says regime rejects proposed ceasefire mechanisms

Sources in the Syrian opposition delegation in the Kazakhstan capital Astana said on Tuesday that the delegation from Damascus has rejected proposed ceasefire mechanisms. The proposal was made by the opposition during meetings with the guarantors of the talks, Russia and Iran, as well as the United Nations. “The opposition delegation is working hard to consolidate the ceasefire as the primary focus of the talks,” explained the sources, who requested anonymity. They did not disclose the details of the proposed mechanisms or the regime’s reason for rejecting them. A fragile ceasefire has been in place in Syria since 30 December, under the auspices of Turkey and Russia. According to spokesman Yahya Al-Aridi, the opposition delegation met on Monday with the […]

Egyptian differences and the anniversary of the January Revolution

For the third year in a row, Egypt’s revolutionary forces are preoccupied by suspicious internal differences that tend to appear just weeks before each anniversary of the 2011 January Revolution. This is the season of calls for the renewal of the revolution in Egypt, a time that the post-revolution government fears, in case the people take to the streets once more. The differences amongst the opposition forces are the main reasons why the government of Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi has survived with some degree of stability and strength. It has succeeded over the past four years in stripping the Egyptians of any effective popular leadership and has fragmented and divided the opposition forces. The same forces, it must be noted, which […]

On the sixth anniversary of the revolution in Egypt, the struggle against oppression continues, the Egyptian Revolutionary Council (ERC) has insisted in a statement to mark the occasion. The council is upholding its principles, it said, by rejecting all forms of military or authoritarian rule, while maintaining its non-violent struggle to achieve freedom, democracy and social justice for all Egyptians. “We salute those in Egypt who are standing firm in the face of the most severe forms of oppression to demand their rights and freedoms,” commented Dr Maha Azzam, the head of the ERC. “We shall support you and stand behind you until the victory of our revolution.” The statement has been issued 6 years after the momentous 18 days […]

Sisi’s paranoia demands that he controls the truth, and Egyptians are paying the price

Almost a year after democratic elections were held in Egypt, Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi came to power through a bloody coup that immediately killed at least a thousand people. Since then, Egyptians have become prisoners at the hands of the state. Thoughts of dissent must be locked in the minds of any thinker because if they are uttered in public, there is a strong possibility that the person may face prison, forced disappearance or death. “We must remember that it isn’t only Muslim Brotherhood supporters,” explained Dr Maha Azzam, the Head of the Egyptian Revolutionary Council, at a MEMO event with former hunger striker Mohamed Soltan in 2015. “Anyone who is openly against the Sisi coup is subject to state brutality.” […]

Jihadists battle moderate rebels in northern Syria

Heavy fighting erupted in northwestern Syria on Tuesday between a powerful jihadist organisation and more moderate rebel groups, threatening to further weaken the opposition to President Bashar al-Assad in its biggest territorial stronghold. Rebel groups fighting under the Free Syrian Army (FSA) banner, some of which attended peace talks in Kazakhstan, accused the jihadist group Jabhat Fateh al-Sham of launching a surprise attack on their positions. Fateh al-Sham, previously known as the Nusra Front, issued a statement which said it had been forced to act preemptively to “thwart conspiracies” being hatched against it. The group accused rebels attending the Kazakhstan talks of conspiring against it, but did not refer to Tuesday’s fighting directly. One of the biggest groups in the […]

Ousted Yemen President conducted illegal transactions to induce instability

According to documents obtained by Al-Jazeera Arabic. The report also discussed the way in which other sanctioned personnel who are affiliated to Saleh and the Houthi movement in Yemen have […]
