Egypt’s parliament calls for revoking El-Baradei’s citizenship

The Egyptian Parliament witnessed on Monday a two-party split over demands of revoking the citizenship of Egypt’s former vice president Mohamed El-Baradei, Ahram Online reported. During the parliament session, a group of MPs demanded the revocation of Baradei’s citizenship, while other members disapproved these demands, stressing that the request should not be based on personal interests. The demands came after a Television presenter on Egypt’s Sada El-Balad channel Ahmed Moussa, who is known for leaking personal recordings of revolutionary activists and politicians, leaked purported recordings of two of El-Baradei’s phone calls. The first call was in March 2011 with Sami Anan, who was then army chief of staff, where he demanded on behalf of protesters the resignation of the cabinet […]

Iran receives Saudi invitation to discuss hajj

An Iranian official today confirmed that Saudi Arabia had invited Tehran to discuss arrangements for the annual Muslim hajj, which Iran boycotted last year after hundreds died in a crush at the 2015 pilgrimage. The incident infuriated Tehran because most of those who were killed were Iranians. Soon after, ties between the two regional rivals worsened further when Saudi Arabia executed a Shia cleric, angry Iranians stormed the Saudi embassy in Tehran, and Riyadh severed diplomatic relations. Last year, Iran did not send any of its citizens to the hajj, accusing Saudi Arabia of failing to guarantee safety. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has called on Muslim countries to end Saudi control of the pilgrimage, while Riyadh has accused […]

UNRWA urges Trump to revive MidEast peace bid

US President-elect Donald Trump and foreign powers should revive the Middle East peace process at a time Palestinian youths are becoming increasingly disillusioned, the head of UNRWA urged today. Relations between the United States and Israel have soured during President Barack Obama’s administration, reaching a low point late last month when Washington cleared the way for a UN resolution demanding an end to Israeli settlements. Obama’s Secretary of State, John Kerry, has said the settlement programme threatened Middle East peace and described a two state solution as in “serious jeopardy”. Trump has said he will pursue more pro-Israel policies after taking office on 20 January. “The reality is just that right now there is no such thing that one can […]
