A US Congresswoman’s trip to Syria has fuelled further speculation that Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad is no longer “beyond the pale” in US politics and policymaking circles. Democrat Tulsi Gabbard who, according to The Washington Post, has charged the Obama administration with funnelling money to Daesh and Al-Qaeda-linked groups in Syria, visited Damascus this week in what her office called a “fact-finding trip…to promote and work for peace.” Commenting on the Congresswoman’s pro-Assad stance, The Washington Post also stated that Gabbard had called for the Obama administration to abandon all assistance to armed groups and stop seeking Al-Assad’s overthrow, saying that the effort undermines the fight against Daesh. Almost 20,000 killed in Syria throughout 2016

As the conflict in Syria continues, the list of contributors to the crimes and violations committed against the Syrian people also continues to grow larger, the Syrian Human Rights Committee (SHRC) stated in its annual report. The SHRC report, the fifteenth since 2001, exposed extensive violations committed against the Syrian people by a variety of actors. Hussain Sajwani, executive chairman of the Emirati property company, DAMAC, announced that the company will continue working on the golf course project with the Trump Organisation, despite US President-elect, Donald Trump’s announcement it had ended. Israeli Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit has ordered an investigation into the alleged corruption of a senior Israeli intelligence official, local media revealed yesterday. According to Israeli newspaper Haaretz, this would include investigating ties between top Israeli spymaster and Mossad chief Yossi Cohen and movie producer Arnon Milchan, also a former intelligence operative, over allegations that he was giving expensive “gifts” to Cohen.
