Israeli retaliation exposes international complicity

Promoting its settler-colonialism as a response to UN Security Council Resolution 2334 has been acknowledged and articulated clearly by the Israeli government. On Monday, Social Equality Minister Gila Gamliel signed grant agreements totalling $625,000 with the Israeli mayors of Beit El, Kiryat Arba and Har Hevron Regional Council; the aim is to entice Israeli youth to collaborate with the government’s colonial ambitions. “In times when there are those who would undermine our presence in Judea and Samaria [the occupied West Bank],” said Gamliel, “I call on young people in Israel to settle in this wonderful region of the country. You have the full political, economic and social security support of the government to settle in Judea and Samaria.” While belligerence […]

Israel is using prison as collective punishment of the Palestinians

A report compiled by Addameer, the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society and Al-Mezan Centre for Human Rights has explained the statistics of the arrest and imprisonment of Palestinians by Israel in 2016. The figures are staggering. A total of 6,400 Palestinians were arrested, including 1332 children, of whom 300 are still imprisoned, among them 11 girls. There were 1,742 administrative detention orders in 2016, of which 635 were new; the others were renewals of existing orders. Prisoners are held indefinitely with neither charge nor trial under this system. Perhaps the most striking observation of the report with regard to administrative detention was its rampant use against younger Palestinians: “The majority of administrative detention orders were issued against young people, including those who […]

Diplomacy and disappearing Palestine

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin has added to the tirade against UN Security Council Resolution 2334. Despite the absence of rhetorical aggression in comparison to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s postulations, Rivlin has outlined the Israeli ambition to see Palestine disappear in a manner that can be disguised within the diplomatic process. “Resolution 2334 and the speech by the Secretary of State [John Kerry] put Israel on trial,” Rivlin told Israeli ambassadors based in Europe. He need not worry; the resolution’s impact upon the international community has already been consigned to history as yet another temporary, illusory triumph for the Palestinian Authority which amounts to little more than regurgitated awareness-raising. Nevertheless, Rivlin availed himself of the opportunity to expound upon the alleged […]

Limited opportunities and flawed choices

The US decision to abstain, rather than use its veto, at the UN Security Council last Friday has generated a limited spectrum of possibilities and definitely raised Israel’s ire, given its retaliatory antics against countries supporting the resolution in question. Israel’s façade, particularly the democratic fantasy which it has promoted while heaping human rights violations upon the Palestinian population, has been altered irreversibly. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, meanwhile, has remained tethered to an imposed and flawed narrative, which may further entrench symbolism as an additional, yet useless, political parameter. In comments following the Security Council vote, Abbas reportedly stated that Resolution 2334 “paves the way for the international peace conference,” which should take place next month in Paris. Departing […]

Israeli tantrums and diplomatic gamesmanship shift attention from Palestine

Last week’s UN Security Council Resolution 2334 can be summarised as a collective international effort to provoke the type of drama in which opportunism and retaliation consolidate their dominion over oblivion. Outgoing US President Barack Obama departed conveniently from the usual veto over resolutions deemed hostile by Israel due to the unfolding timeline rather than a change in foreign policy. Predictably, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu exposed his belligerence by recalling ambassadors and ordering the termination of aid to Senegal. The latter should count as evidence of Israel’s real interests in giving aid to Africa; it is simply a way to bribe developing countries into giving their support to its colonial ambitions in Palestine. The rhetoric of abandonment has been […]

Jerusalem highlights the extent of Palestine’s fragmentation

As Israel’s colonial ambitions prevail largely unhindered, Jerusalem has been bequeathed with further unwarranted contention. Speaking during a reception at the Israeli embassy in Washington, Ambassador Ron Dermer declared that moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem would constitute “a great step forward” for Israel’s peace; the warped definition of “peace” is tantamount to Palestine’s (and Palestinians’) annihilation. Quoted in the Times of Israel, Dermer added that such a decision would “send a strong message against [the] delegitimisation of Israel.” His statements echo Donald Trump’s electoral rhetoric as well as recent assertions by the president-elect’s senior aide Kellyanne Conway, who described the as yet hypothetical move as “something that our friend Israel, a great friend in the Middle […]
