Cuba: US decision on Jerusalem dangerous

US President Donald Trump’s announcement that his administration will recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel is a dangerous step and “violates the legitimate interests of the Palestinian people”, the Cuban Foreign Ministry announced in a statement today.

“The United States’ intention to amend the historical status of Jerusalem violates the legitimate interests of the Palestinian people and the Arab and Muslim countries, and will have serious consequences on the stability and security in the Middle East. It will also escalate tension in the region and hinder any effort aiming to resume peace talks between the Israelis and Palestinians,” it added.

Cuba also called on the UN Security Council to uphold the promises it made in the UN Charter regarding the preservation of peace and security in the two countries and making the necessary decisions in this regard. It also urged the Council to demand Israel immediately put an end to its occupation of the Palestinian territories and to its hostile policies and colonial practices, in addition to adhering to the resolutions issued by the Security Council regarding the Middle East, including the Palestinian cause.

Cuba will continue its support for finding a comprehensive, fair and permanent solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that is based on reaching a suitable two-state solution in a manner that would allow Palestinians to determine their fate and establish an independent sovereign state with East Jerusalem as its capital along the 1967 borders, the statement added.
