Unemployment in Jordan rises to 18.2%

Unemployment rates in Jordan have increased to 18.2 per cent in the first quarter of this year, compared to 15.8 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2016. Jordan’s Department of Statistics said in a statement yesterday that the unemployment rate among males was 13.9 per cent, compared to 33 per cent among females in the first quarter of this year. Unemployment among university degree holders was 21.4 per cent. Lebanese writer Elias Khoury accuses Israel of stealing his novel

Lebanese writer and novelist, Elias Khoury, yesterday accused the Israeli theatre festival, Merkaz Habama, of stealing his novel Yalu and turn it into a play without his permission. In a post on Facebook, Khoury said in that no one has asked his permission to quote his novel for the theatre or to show it at the festival in Jerusalem, stressing that he strictly boycotts all institutions associated with the occupying state. He said that the festival is funded by the Jerusalem Fund where the Mayor of occupied Jerusalem, Nir Barkat, serves as an honorary president. Israel soldier shoots Palestinian girl

Israeli soldiers today shot and injured a Palestinian girl near the entrance to the settlement of Movo Dotan. Fifteen-year-old Nouf Iqab Abdel-Jabbar Infeiat from Yabed village near occupied Jenin was taken by ambulance to be treated in an Israeli hospital. A spokesperson for the Hillel Yaffe medical centre in the city of Hadera confirmed to Ma’an that the Palestinian was being operated there, adding that she was in “critical condition”. Later, the Israeli occupation forces closed the main road connecting the Jenin governorate with Tulkarm, as well as the villages and towns near Yabed in Jenin. The Israeli occupation forces also declared the Movo Dotan checkpoint, adjacent to the agricultural land of the town of Yabed, a closed military zone.

Sudan, Chad agree to repatriate refugees

The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and the governments of Sudan and Chad yesterday signed a tripartite agreement for the voluntary repatriation of refugees from both countries. According to the Sudanese Refugee Agency, 8,550 Chadian refugees live in Sudan while 392,000 Sudanese refugees live in Chad. The agreement was signed by Sudan’s State Minister at the Ministry of Interior, Babiker Ahmed Digna, Chadian Minister of the State Ministry of Land Administration and Local Government, Aboubakar Djibrile Aboubakar, and UNHCR Representative in Sudan, Noriko Yoshida.
